A commercial bus driver, who was identified as Kenneth Anyanwu, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment by a Lagos State Mobile Court sitting in Oshodi, for stabbing a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), official, Olanrewaju Yusuf.
Magistrate F.O. Ikobayo convicted Anyanwu following his plea of guilty to a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace.
She sentenced him to one year imprisonment or a fine of N50,000. The magistrate also ordered the convict to pay N80,000 for Yusuf’s medical bills.
Anyanwu committed the offence on April 26, on Ikorodu Road near Palm Grove Bus Stop, inward Onipanu.
Yusuf attempted to arrest Anyanwu for picking passengers at undesignated bus stops between Obanikoro and Palm Grove, but Anyanwu resisted.
He picked a broken bottle and aimed for Yusuf’s neck, but Yusuf raised his hand to parry the blow and was slashed in the process.
This is not the first time a LASTMA official will be physically assaulted by a commercial bus (Danfo bus) driver.
The LASTMA officials and the commercial road users in general always go neck to neck while doing their jobs in Lagos.
A few years ago, another LASTMA official was stabbed by a tricycle rider (Keke Napep) but this time, on purpose, for being stopped after he disobeyed a traffic law.
There had been a huge uproar after the incident and special authorities had had to get involved to put a stop to the uproar.
Sometime ago at the Ikeja area of Lagos, some LASTMA officials were beaten severely by tricycle riders.
Although, the actual cause of the assault on the LASTMA officials was not disclose to members of the press who were at the scene of the incident, speculations had been that it was to get back at another LASTMA official who had not been nice to the riders.
