Mother Loses Her Children After Abeokuta Flood (Watch Video)

The Abeokuta flood which ravaged parts of Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, and its environs, destroying properties in its surge, also left a family with a tragic end.

Two children of the same mom, at Odedairo street, Nawardeen area, were reportedly lost to the Abeokuta flood which came after two hours of torrential rain. The late kids had just returned from school and waiting for the arrival of their mom, when tragedy struck.

The Nation also reported that many residents were sacked from their homes and shops when their apartments were invaded by the flood. Household items, goods and other valuables were destroyed.

In Omolasho and Kuto, major commercial areas of Abeokuta, goods and structures worth millions of naira were swept away and emptied into a canal by the Isabo state High court area where the flood was most violent and fiercest.

Dozens of vehicles packed by the roadsides were also submerged with some of them dragged into gullies and pits. Areas most hard hit are Ijaye, Omolasho, Kuto, Isale Egbein and Ijeja where the flood damaged the bridge linking Ijeja and other parts of the state capital.

The Archdiocesan Headquarters of the Celestial Church of Christ, Ijaye, Abeokuta was also severely hit and dozens of home within the area affected as some of the residential buildings either collapsed, tilt or got weakened as to make them unsafe for habitation.

In Ago Ijesha area, a mother and her toddler – daughter were swept away by the flood during the torrential rain.

One of the eyewitnesses, Oyinlomo, recounted how she and her two children almost lost their lives in the Abeokuta flood.

She shared: “I was in this bus with my kids, all the passenger had already came down when they saw the flood entering the bus. But, I was with 2 kids and couldn’t help the situation, I cried my eyes out bitterly begging people to help me carry my kids out even if I would die in the flood but everyone were just after themselves (well understood).

“The people that are taller than me were drowned to the level of their chest in the flood without carrying kids, what about me with an average height with kids?
We were helpless, crying and praying.

“My first daughter said, ‘Mummy, is dis how we will die?’ I shouted at her ‘ just keep praying we can’t die’ but within me I already lost hope myself.

“You might not understand how bad it was but I was rescued after 15mins of (mistakenly) taking this video, and it was still raining heavily non stop, so you can imagine how our bus was flooded, all the cars around me, their head could not be seen.

“In my presence the flood was moving cars and buses, and drowned some able bodied men, but some okada riders came when they were told 2 children were still in d bus in the middle of the flood and I was just shouting “I WILL GIVE U ANY AMOUNT BUT HELP ME SAVE MY INNOCENT KIDS” I was carried on his back like a baby.”
